The Nest Curriculum

We use core stories and rhymes as a foundation of our curriculum and these areincorporated into our daily routines.

Our Early Years Curriculum focusses on seven areas of learning and development. All these areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected.

Our starting point is the prime areas which are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

We then support the children to develop the skills and knowledge in the specific
areas which are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world
  • Expressive arts and design

As well as learning through the curriculum areas we also support children on a daily basis to develop ‘Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning’:

Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:

  • Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
  • Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
  • Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
